Significance

Guajadial is a novel meroterpenoid isolated from the leaves of Psidium guajava (guava), which has been used traditionally in African and Asian folk medicine to treat a variety of conditions. In the original isolation paper (Org. Lett. 2007, 9, 5135) a biosynthesis was proposed involving a hetero-Diels-Alder reaction between cis-caryophyllene and an ortho-quinone methide.
