Significance
A general route to programmable microcapsules that release their contents in response to specific stimuli is reported (inset). The vesicles are prepared by crosslinking self-immolative polymer 1 under conditions that promote the formation of discrete microcapsules. The authors prove that under appropriate ‘triggering’ conditions the walls of the isolated vesicles can be ruptured allowing trapped substrates to be released.
