Significance
Building upon previous work the authors report a cooperative catalyst system consisting of a cinchona alkaloid and Ti(Oi-Pr)4 for the enantioselective synthesis of heterocycles (N. Shibata, T. Toru and co-workers Synlett 2006, 3484). The heterocycles formed in this manner possess a quaternary center bearing a trifluoromethyl group. These novel heterocycles could be potentially interesting from a medicinal chemistry perspective.
