Significance
(-)-Englerin A, a sesquiterpene diester recently isolated from Phylanthus engleri, inhibits renal cancer cell growth with nanomolar potency. This synthesis was published back-to-back with Echavarren and co-workers (see next Synfact) who used a similar methodology (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2006, 45, 5452). A previous synthetic route involved a ring contraction and Grubbs metathesis (M. Christmann and co-workers Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 9105).
