Significance

The controlling of movements in molecular machines has been gaining considerable interest over the past years. Herein, the authors report the synthesis and characterization of a molecular turnstile. The Sn-O bonds form the hinge allowing for free rotation of the handle about it (1), while the binding of palladium(II) impedes this movement resulting in the closed state 2.
