I want to thank Dr. Samir Mardini, Dr. Christopher J. Salgado, and Dr. Hung-Chi Chen for sharing the responsibility as guest editors for this Part I issue of Seminars in Plastic Surgery on “Advances in Head and Neck Reconstruction” and the invited authors for sharing their experience.

Samir Mardini, M.D.

Dr. Samir Mardini is currently an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is also a Consultant in the Division of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Mardini obtained his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his plastic surgery residency at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. After completing his residency at Georgetown, Dr. Mardini began a fellowship in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, where he developed a strong interest in head and neck reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Mardini serves on the board of Seminars in Plastic Surgery and is a manuscript reviewer for Microsurgery, Surgery, Diseases of the Esophagus, JPRS (Journal of Plastic Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery.) At this early stage in his career he has 12 book chapters and two books to his credit as well as 64 peer-reviewed publications.

Christopher J. Salgado, M.D.

Dr. Salgado is a board-certified plastic surgeon who received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC in 1995 and stayed on at Georgetown for his general surgery training. Dr. Salgado completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY in 2000. He then served as a Major in the U.S. Army for 4 years, as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Darnall U.S. Army Medical Center at Ft Hood, Texas and Assistant Chief of Plastic Surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Ft. Bliss, Texas. Subsequently, he went on for additional training in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan and at E-Da Hospital/I-Shou University as a Reconstructive Microsurgery Scholar.

Dr. Salgado practiced as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Plastic Surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio from April 2008 to April 2010. He recently became a faculty member of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Miami, Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery, Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida.

He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, written multiple book chapters, and serves on the editorial board of a leading plastic surgery journal. His clinical and research interests are in postoncologic (cancer) reconstruction, genital and perineal functional and aesthetic surgery, aesthetic body contouring, limb salvage, lymph edema, and trauma reconstruction.

Hung-Chi Chen, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Chen obtained his medical degree from National Taiwan University College of Medicine in 1974. After 4 years of general surgery training and three years of plastic surgery training in Taiwan, Dr. Chen came to the United States and had training in hand and microsurgery at Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky.

From 1976 to 2004, Dr. Chen worked at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital where he performed a large number of reconstructive microsurgery cases, ranging from extremity to trunk and esophageal reconstruction. He has devoted 30 years of his career to reconstructive microsurgery. In Taiwan, Dr. Chen was appointed as Professor of Plastic Surgery by Chang Gung University as well as by the Ministry of Education in 1997. He was elected as President of the Society of Hand Surgery in 2000 and as President of Plastic Surgery in 2002.

He has published 325 journal articles, presented 423 scientific presentations at conferences, and authored 15 book chapters and a book (Voice Reconstruction). In 2004, he became the superintendent of E-Da Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where he still continues clinical and research work in microsurgery and the training of overseas microsurgery fellows.

His major interest now is reconstruction of esophagus and voice, including clinical improvement (especially difficult cases) and research.
