Summary

Hametum® ointment in patients with drug-induced cutaneous symptoms Background/objective. Undesirable side effects of any treatment with systemically administered drugs often include cutaneous symptoms such as itching, dry and flaky skin, sensations of tautness, and tiny fissures. Consequently, this study was aimed at investigating the efficacy and tolerability of “Hametum® Wund- und Heilsalbe” (wound healing ointment; active pharmaceutical ingredient: Hamamelis distillate) in patients with drug-induced cutaneous symptoms. Methods. In this single-centre, open-label Phase IV trial, the study medication was applied twice daily over a period of 28 days to the affected skin (tested on the left lower leg). Primary target parameters were the lipid content of the skin (measured by sebumetry) and moisture content of the skin (measured by corneometry). Results. By the end of the treatment period, the lipid content of the skin had increased significantly from 0.69 ± 0.99 to 60.91 ± 76.86 µg sebum/cm2 of skin (p < 0.001; t-test for related samples). With regard to moisture content, there was an increase by trend from 43.53 ± 8.02 to 45.12 ± 13.16 arbitrary units (p = 0.218; t-test for related samples). In 97.2% of all cases, skin compatibility was assessed as “very good” or “good” by the investigator. Conclusions. The results of this study demonstrate that Hametum® ointment is very efficient in treating drug-induced dryness of the skin, with very good skin compatibility.
