Significance

The authors present a convenient four-step synthesis of naphtho[1,2-b:5,6-b’]di-thiophene (NDT) and -diselenophene (NDS) derivatives. This methodology presents the first synthetically convenient route to these core structures. The protocol for the thiophene annulation step was recently developed for mono-, bis-, and tris-annulated derivatives of the benzene group (T. Kashiki et al. Org. Lett. 2009, 11, 2473).
