Significance

Building upon their own work with nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (Tetrahedron 2008, 64, 11379), the authors report the synthesis of two chalcogen-containing analogues. A red-shift in both absorbance and emission is observed in the sequence of nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur. Finally, 1 was shown to form columnar liquid crystals.
