Significance

Optically active calix[4]arenes where the chirality comes from the substitution of the methylene bridges are presented for the first time. Usual strategies for the synthesis of optically active calixarenes come from substitution either on the benzene rings or on the alkoxy substituents. This family of molecules is relevant as scaffolds for chiral recognition events.
