Significance
The photodimerization of 6-methylcoumarin was shown to be catalyzed through the addition of substoichiometric amounts of the macrocyclic host cucurbit[8]uril. The templated reaction provided the dimer products with high levels of syn-selectivity, whereas the uncatalyzed process gave a mixture of products. Both irradiation from a UV lamp as well as natural sunlight were shown to affect the catalyzed reaction efficiently.
