Significance

The synthesis of a fluorescent azobenzene photochrome is reported. The presence of a bulky triptycenoid spacer prevents intramolecular fluorescence quenching and thus imparts orthogonality to the photochromic and fluorescent moieties of the molecule. The photoinduced migration of this photochrome is used to reversibly create reliefs.
