Significance
This paper describes the utility of arene-perfluoroarene interactions in the self-assembly of electro-optic (EO) materials. The authors assess the increase in poling efficiency based on the arene unit employed. The resulting tetraene chromophores exhibit ultralarge EO coefficients along with concomitant thermal stability as a result of the strong interactions between arene and perfluoroarene moieties. The EO materials were synthesized in eight steps with an overall yield of ˜12%.
