Significance

This paper described the development of a novel synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles via palladium-catalyzed intramolecular cyanoamidation of styrene derivatives. Cyclization to form the lactam ring and generation of an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter are realized in a single step. Good to moderate enantiomeric excesses were obtained with a number of substrates.
