As we step into the role of Editor for this esteemed journal, we find it both fitting and necessary to acknowledge the remarkable contributions of our predecessor, Markus Heinemann. From 2010 to 2025, his dedication, leadership, and vision have not only shaped the trajectory of this publication but have also left an enduring impact on the scientific community it serves.

Markus has been an unwavering force in advancing the quality and integrity of scientific publishing. Under his 15 years of stewardship, this journal has flourished—becoming a trusted platform for research, dissemination of knowledge, and for DGTHG messages and official bulletins found in the “Blue Pages.” His meticulous editorial standards, commitment to ethical publishing, and unwavering support for authors and reviewers have set a high bar for excellence. As a member of the “European Association of Science Editors,” Markus arranged scientific analyses from this journal's data and reported those to his fellow editors all over the world.

Beyond his editorial achievements for TCS, Markus has developed the idea of a case report journal, the daughter journal “Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgeon Reports (TCSR).” For me, as the first editor of this daughter journal handling case reports, he has been a mentor and advocate.

Markus has fostered an environment of inclusivity and intellectual curiosity, ensuring that diverse voices and novel perspectives find a place within these pages. His ability to balance innovation with tradition has strengthened the journal's reputation as a beacon of scientific rigor and relevance, bringing the so-called “Impact Factor” to new heights.

Markus also had his own unmistakable style. A lover of British traditions, he infused the journal with a refined editorial elegance. His special sense of humor was legendary—bringing levity to the yearly presentation of the journal's achievements and reminding us that great science can, and should, be accompanied by a touch of charm and wit. Perhaps the older of us remember his legendary “Büttenrede” as the newly chosen editor in 2010 or the “Tagesschau” presentation years later.

In an era where academic publishing faces new challenges and opportunities, Markus has navigated them with wisdom and foresight. His efforts to embrace open science and uphold the highest standards of peer review have positioned this journal for continued success. The legacy he leaves behind is not just one of impactful publications but of a community enriched by his leadership and personality.

So today, as we take on this new responsibility, we want to extend our deepest gratitude: Thank you, Markus. Thank you for your brilliance, your mentorship, and your tireless dedication. Your contributions will continue to inspire, and we hope to build upon the strong foundation you have laid.
