Verschiedene Klassifikationssysteme haben sich hier etabliert (Siewert, Nishi, TNM/UICC). Die genaue Kenntnis über die Tumorlokalisation ist von höchster klinischer Relevanz, da sie wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Operationsstrategie hat.
