Abstract

Origanum dictamnus L., dittany of Crete, is endemic to Crete. The aerial parts have been used since ancient times as a medicine, e. g. for the treatment of wounds, of gastrointestinal, gynecological disorders and of coughs and sneezes. Within numerous phytochemical studies, a broad spectrum of flavonoids, cinnamic acids and simple organic acids, depsides, triterpenes and an essential oil were reported. The essential oil mainly consists of carvacrol, p-cymene und γ-terpinene. Modern in vitro studies confirm antimicrobial, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic effects of the aerial parts, i. e. extracts and the essential oil. In a monograph on the aerial parts, the HMPC entitled the status of so-called "traditional use" due to their long-term use. So far, there are no clinical studies on the effectiveness of the herbal drug and preparations prepared thereof.
