Hornhautbanken als Begleiter von Innovationen in der Hornhautchirurgie

Korneologen werden nicht müde zu betonen, dass die Hornhauttransplantation weltweit die älteste, die erfolgreichste und die häufigste Transplantation überhaupt ist. Hinterlistige, meist fachfremde Zeitgenossen ergänzen diese Superlativliste dann schon einmal spontan um das Attribut „die einfachste“. Nicht abzustreiten ist jedoch, dass die Zahl der Hornhauttransplantationen im letzten Jahrzehnt – zumindest in Deutschland und dank der reduzierten Invasivität und deutlich gestiegener funktioneller Ergebnisse – wie keine andere angestiegen ist: von um die 1000 Eingriffe im Jahr 1980 um über 900% (!) auf über 9200 im Jahr 2020 [1], [2].
