Abstract

Background One of the assumed effects of kinesio tape is the improvement of the proprioceptive feedback and should also improve postural control. Therefore, various studies have been conducted to examine the effect of kinesio tape on postural control of healthy volunteers. This review would like to give an overview of the research status regarding this topic.

Material and Methods A systematic literature research was carried out searching the electronic databases of PubMed and Web of Knowledge. Search terms were „postural balance tape healthy“.

Results 17 relevant studies were identified, read in full text and summarized. Missing effect sizes were calculated if necessary. Ten investigations could identify a significant effect of kinesio tape on postural control.

Conclusion Since taping techniques and collected balance parameters were quite heterogeneous a comparison of the studies was difficult. Exercise seems to reduce postural control but kinesio tape seems to alleviate this effect. In addition, healthy volunteers seem to profit from kinesio tape in complex situations and when having reduced postural control. Further studies are needed.
