Comparison of wheat and yeast

In this paper, RL Jones and MD Jenkins reported a follow-up of their work on wheat coleoptiles as an in vitro model for investigating homeopathic remedies, published in this journal in 1981. This time they compared the effect of a number of potencies of Pulsatilla on both wheat and yeast. Centesimal potencies 1–13 were used, each treatment in quadruplicate; and distilled water was used for the controls.

Variations of growth were plotted against potency for both wheat and yeast. The effects on growth were all statistically significant; but in the yeast series they were five times greater than those for the wheat. Increase and inhibition of growth occurred at the same potencies in both organisms. The yeast method was much more sensitive, and the test could be completed in 1 day, rather than the 6 needed for the wheat. The authors considered the yeast method to be a significant advance in the search for methods of studying the in vitro effect of homeopathic potencies.
