Significance

A silica-supported molybdenum complex 2 was prepared and found to promote ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM). Thus, the reaction of trisamidomolybdenum(VI) complex 1 with fumed silica in trichlorobenzene gave molybdenum catalyst 2. The RCAM of diyne 3 was carried out under reduced pressure conditions (1 mmHg to remove 3-hexyne) in the presence of 5 mol% Mo of the catalyst 2 to give cyclic product 4 in 62% yield. The RCAM of several diynes gave the corresponding cyclic products in good yield (3 examples: 65-67% yield).
