Significance

The authors report a new way to obtain charge-transfer chromophores from 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ). TCNQ undergoes a thermal [2+2] cycloaddition in the presence of several electron-rich N,N-dialkylanilino-substituted alkynes with generally high yields and complete regioselectivity.
