Significance

Gold-catalyzed oxidative homocoupling with simple arenes was realized for the first time. C-H functionalization was shown to proceed with remarkable functional group tolerance, where even iodo-substituents were tolerated. For this coupling reaction no inert atmosphere or pretreatment of the solvent was required. The reaction could simply be performed in air without the exclusion of moisture.
