Significance

The oxidation of various benzyl halides 1 with DMSO took place in the presence of a hydrotalcite catalyst (40% w/w) to give the corresponding carbonyl compounds 2 with up to 89% yield. This catalyst was separated from reaction mixture by simple filtration, and reused four times in the oxidation of benzyl chloride with no significant loss of activity.
