Significance

Pentakis(p-tolylethynyl)phenol, a common mesogen in discotic liquid crystals, was functionalized with a fluorocarbon-terminated alkyl chain. The fluorinated segment introduced nanophase segregation in the nematic phase of the resulting liquid crystal and also directed the system toward lamellar organization instead of the usually observed columnar ordering.
