Significance

This is one of the first examples of asymmetric Rh-catalyzed 1,2-addition reactions to cyclic enones lacking substituents in the α-position. This methodology provides easy access to tertiary alcohols with high enantioselectivity and good to excellent yields using the readily available Rh-binap complex and various inexpensive organoaluminum reagents.
