Significance

This publication describes a simple and inexpensive method for the preparation of α-aryl malonates from the corresponding aryl and heteroaryl iodides. The reactions are conveniently performed at room temperature. Electron-rich and electron-poor aryl iodides react equally well. While some other protocols applying copper catalysis for this reaction have already been published, this is the most practical one for aryl iodides published up to date.
