Significance

A transition-metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols using a supported catalyst has been developed. TEMPO@SBA-15 (1) (1-1.5 mol%) in combination with NaNO2 (10-20 mol%) and n-Bu4NBr (8-14 mol%) mediates the reaction of various alcohols 2 with pure oxygen or air to the corresponding carbonyl compounds 3 in high yields. Immobilized catalyst 1 can be recycled thirteen times without considerable loss of efficiency.
