Numerous studies world-wide have shown an increased risk for physicians to develop a burnout in comparison to other occupational groups. First the burnout syndrome is defined in this article. It is followed by an overview of the actual research on burnout, quality of life, substance abuse and depression amongst German doctors. To summarise reliable epidemiological data in support of this is lacking in Germany. Other countries offer specific therapy options to physicians, which are partly supported by the medical associations. These options are almost non-existant in Germany. Epidemiologic research on this topic seems essential. A second step could be to analyse the ways of causes, prevention and an eventual demand on physician specific therapy options.
