Significance

The authors describe the use of a chiral reducing reagent prepared from sodium borohydride and tartaric acid. This reagent successfully reduced a number of achiral α- and β-ketophosphonates as well as chiral α- and β-ketophosphonates giving single- or double-asymmetric induction. The enantio- and diastereo­selectivity was moderate to very high depending on the substrate.
