Significance

The Friedel-Crafts alkylation is one of the most common C-C bond-forming reactions. This is the first report concerning the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of arenes, using halonium ions as intermediates. This reaction gives a simple synthetic way to 1,1-diaryl-2-haloalkanes and α,α-diaryl-β-haloesters and -ketones. Substituted styrenes, cinnamic esters and halcones are suitable intermediates.
