Cavitand Sensors for DMMP Using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR)

Significance
The synthesis of resorcinarene-based cavitands containing a single carboxylic acid group, pointed into or out of the cavity, is reported. As a result of the hydrophobic rim of the cavity the compounds, C5-COOHout and C5-COOHin, show high selectivity for detection of dimethylmethylphosphonate (DMMP) over water as measured by SPR spectroscopy. Both compounds are superior to a fluoropolyol layer in terms of sensitivity and selectivity, but C5-COOHin shows a reduced response to water vapors due to the location of the carboxylic acid binding group within the hydrophobic core.
