Significance

Aromatic α-hydroxy ketones are hydrogenated in very high yields with very high enantioselectivity. This class of ketones has not been successfully hydrogenated prior to this report. The low catalyst loading (S/C = 6000:1) is quite a nice feature. The ligand structure of the Ir catalyst was found to be crucial for reactivity and selectivity.
