Significance

This paper is a significant contribution to the emerging field of multicomponent reactions. Three distinct bond-forming events take place in a single step to give δ-lactones containing an asymmetric quaternary carbon stereocenter. The asymmetric aldol reaction to ketones is the key enantioselective step in this protocol.
