Significance

Cribrostatin 4 displays low-micromolar cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity. The key step in the synthesis depicted is the reductive cleavage/elimination of the β-lactam in I followed by Pictet-Spengler cyclization of the intermediate iminium ion J.
