Significance

m-Iodosylbenzoic acid (1.5 mol equiv) was used for the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols with RuCl3 in aqueous MeCN or in aqueous NaHCO3 to give the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in 50-99% yields (18 products). Separation of pure products was achieved by scavenging m-iodobenzoic acid (and m-iodosylbenzoic acid, etc.) with the ion exchange resin IRA-400 (OH- form) or by extracting with the basic aqueous solution. The recovered m-iodobenzoic acid was converted into m-iodosylbenzoic acid with Ac2O and H2O2.
