Significance

The authors prepared the heterogeneous chiral catalyst Co(Salen)/SBA-16-C8 or Ru-TsDPEN/SBA-16-2Ph in which a chiral metal complex was entrapped in the cage of SBA-16 by modifying the entrance pore size of the cage using silylation (eq. 1). The catalytic performance of the encapsulated complexes for the asymmetric ring-opening reaction of epoxides [Co(Salen)/SBA-16-C8, eq. 2] and the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones (Ru-TsDPEN/SBA-16-2Ph, eq. 3) were comparable to their homogeneous counterparts.
