Significance

Detailed studies on Pd/C-catalyzed deoxygenation of phenolic hydroxy groups starting from the triflates or mesylates were described. Reduction of aryl sulfonates (TfOAr or MsOAr) were found to proceed smoothly with methanol (MeOH or MeOD) in the presence of Pd/C (catalyst) and Mg to give H-Ar (D-Ar) products where the alcoholic groups of methanol (MeOH or MeOD) served as the hydrogen (deuterium) source.
