Significance

The authors synthesized a variety of molecules containing (a) an electron-rich naphthyl ether moiety with a hydrocarbon tail, (b) an electron-poor naphthalimide moiety with a fluorocarbon tail and (c) either a rigid or flexible bridge that links both parts. In single crystals, the hydro- and fluorocarbon tails do not co-crystallize, thus resulting in distinct naphthyl ether and naphthalimide domains in the solid state.
