Significance

Reported is an approach to 1,1′-, 2,2′-, 3,3′-biquinolizinium dications via palladium-catalyzed Stille homocoupling reactions of the corresponding isomeric bromoquinolizinium bromides. Perhaps owing to steric hindrance and/or strong charge repulsion, the 1,1′-biquinolizinium dication was obtained in lower yield. Furthermore, the synthesis of the 4,4′-biquinolizinium dication failed. Ab initio calculations predict that 1,1′- and 4,4′-biquinolizinium dications should exist as chiral molecules.
