Significance

The authors present air-stable ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) using 4,4′-bis[(6,6′-diphenyl)-2,2-difluoro-1,3,2-dioxaborine] (DOB) and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as n-type and p-type semiconductor material, respectively. DOB was obtained in 98% yield by reacting BF3×OEt2 with intermediate 1 in boiling acetic acid. The fabricated devices exhibit a field-effect mobility of 1 × 10-4 cm2V-1s-1, an on/off ratio of 104 and a threshold voltage of 8.6 V under ambient conditions.
