Akute Psychosen sind nicht nur extrem belastend für den Betroffenen und seine Angehörigen, sondern auch für den behandelnden Arzt. Er muss in kürzester Zeit entscheiden, was in der jeweiligen Situation am günstigsten ist, welche Diagnose gestellt werden kann. Er muss die entsprechende Medikation auswählen, den Patienten beruhigen, ihn zur Mitarbeit motivieren und jegliche Eskalation der Situation vermeiden.

Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass bereits in dieser Phase die Weichen für den langfristigen Therapieerfolg gestellt werden. Der Erstkontakt und die medikamentöse Einstellung bestimmen den weiteren Verlauf der Erkrankung und damit auch den langfristigen Therapieerfolg.
