Summary

Levodopa combined with a peripheral dopadecarboxylase inhibitor is a very effective drug treatment for most patients with Parkinson's disease. The question of long term complications due to levodopa treatment has not been answered. However, at present many specialists feel there is no convincing evidence for clinically relevant toxicity or irreversible side effects.

Levodopa and carbidopa is the most frequently used combination, readily water-soluble and also available as sustained-release preparation. Thus, important preparations are available as relevant alternative choices for patients with advanced disease.
