Complex Action of Antidepressant Treatment on Central Adrenergic System: Possible Relevance to Clinical Effects

Abstract

Chronic antidepressant treatment with classical and atypical antidepressant drugs and ECT leads to complex changes in the central adrenergic system, consisting of upregulation of alpha₁ and downregulation of alpha₂ and beta adrenoceptors. These changes may lead to a specific facilitation of neurotransmission in structures employing alpha₁ adrenoceptors, involved in the control of mood and emotions.

Die Langzeitbehandlung mit klassischen und atypischen Antidepressiva und Elektroschocktherapie bewirkt komplexe Veränderungen im zentraladrenergischen System, die in der Hochregulierung der Alpha₁ - und Herunterregulierung von Alpha₂ - und Beta-adrenergen Rezeptoren ihren Ausdruck finden. Diese Veränderungen können zu einer spezifischen Erleichterung der Neurotransmission in Strukturen führen, die Alpha₁ -adrenerge Rezeptoren enthalten und an der Steuerung von Stimmungen und Emotionen beteiligt sind.
