Significance

A silsesquioxane-bound molybdenum catalyst for alkyne metathesis was prepared from Mo(VI) precatalyst 1 and silsesquioxane 2. This catalyst was applied to the ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM) and the cyclooligomerization reaction. RCAM of diyne 3 with 1 and 2 gave a mixture of the monomeric macrocycle 4 and the dimeric macrocycle 5 under vacuum-driven conditions. Tetrameric macrocycle 7 was obtained in high isolated yield via alkyne metathesis of substrate 6 using 1 and 2 under precipitation-driven conditions.
