Significance

Here the authors report a phase-transfer-catalyzed asymmetric alkylation of α-acyl-γ-butyrolactones under mild conditions. Catalyst 1 in combination with Cs2CO3 has been found to be effective for this reaction. With 1 mol% of the catalyst good to high yields (40-94%) and enantio­selectivities (er = 78:22 to >99:1) are obtained for different α-acyl-γ-butyrolactones with different benzylic and allylic halides.
