Summary

In recent years, evidence has been accumulating that early treatment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases has a particular impact on its further course. Since rheumatic complaints are very common, and the family doctor cannot refer all his patients to a rheumatologist, screening examinations may be helpful in some cases. With regard to medicinal treatment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases, four major classes of drug are currently employed, either alone or in combination: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, glucocorticoids, basic drugs (Basistherapeutika = disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs), and the new class of biological substances.
