The dopaminergic system is commonly assumed to play a central role in the pathophysiology of psychosis and schizophrenia. Besides influencing disorder-associated imbalances of the dopaminergic system, antipsychotics cause adverse drug reactions due to effects on other dopaminergic functions.

In this presentation, a detailed overview of the dopaminergic system with its various brain pathways and their neurobiological functions will be given. Dopaminergic effects of typical and atypical antipsychotics will be presented in view of the desired effects as well as in view of side effects.
