Tailgut Cyst in a Neonate with Anal Stenosis

Abstract

Tailgut cysts, embryological remnants of the hindgut, are rare retrorectal tumours. They have been described in adults but are rare in children, especially neonates. We report a case of a neonate, who presented with anal stenosis and an incidental ultrasonographic finding of a presacral mass. Excision and histological examination of the mass confirmed the appearance of a tailgut cyst. There were no postoperative complications and no evidence of recurrence of the presacral mass over one year after excision. The clinical, pathological, and radiological findings of the tailgut cyst are described with a review of the literature.

Les kystes de l'intestin terminal sont des vestiges embryonnaires se présentant comme d'exceptionnelles tumeurs retrorectales. La description est connue chez l'adulte mais rare chez le nouveau-né. Nous rapportons le cas d'un nouveau-né présentant une sténose anale où l'ultrasonographie a mis en évidence une masse présacrée. Après résection, l'examen histopathologique a confirmé le diagnostic de kyste de l'intestin terminal. Il n'y avait pas eu de complications postopératoires et aucun signe de récidive de la masse présacrée un an après résection. Nous présentons les aspects cliniques, anatomopathologiques et radiologiques et une revue de la littérature.

Resumen

Los quistes caudales, restos embriológicos del intestino posterior, son tumores retrorectales raros. Han sido descritos en adultos pero son raros en niños y particularmente en recién nacidos. Presentamos el caso de un recién nacido con estenosis anal y un hallazgo ecográfico casual de masa presacra. La extirpación y el examen histológico de la masa confirmaron que se trataba de un quiste caudal. No hubo complicaciones postoperatorias ni recidiva de la masa un año después de la extirpación. Describimos los hallazgos clínicos, patológicos y radiológicos del quiste caudal y revisamos la literatura.

Zusammenfassung

Schwanzdarmzysten sind embryologische Reste des Enddarmes und seltene retrorektale Tumoren. Sie wurden bei Erwachsenen beschrieben, sind jedoch im Kindesalter, insbesondere bei Neugeborenen, sehr selten. Der Fall eines Neugeborenen mit einer Analstenose und einem präsakralen Tumor, der zufällig im Rahmen einer Ultraschalluntersuchung festgestellt wurde, wird vorgestellt. Die Therapie bestand in der Exstirpation. Die histologische Untersuchung ergab eine Schwanzdarmzyste. Postoperativ kam es zu keinen Komplikationen und keinem Zystenrezidiv innerhalb eines Jahres. Die Klinik, Pathologie und radiologischen Befunde von Schwanzdarmzysten sowie die in der Literatur beschriebenen Fälle werden vorgestellt.
