Abstract

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are capable of inducing bone formation, or osteoinduction. By now, two BMPs, BMP-7 and BMP-2, are commercially available, and have found their way into some clinical applications. In this overview, the results of several animal experiments using these two BMPs are summarized, and future directions for use of BMPs are highlighted. The focus in the described animal experiments is on fracture healing and treatment of bone defects.
